Breaking Barriers, Building Futures

Empowering Incarcerated Individuals Through Comprehensive Education and Professional Development

What We Do

The Perryman Project focuses on criminal justice reform by providing education, legal support, and resources to those impacted by incarceration. Our mission is to empower individuals and reduce recidivism through our interconnected organizations.

Potential students
per year

The Perryman Institute aims to enroll thousands of incarcerated individuals annually in its Bachelor's Degree program. This initiative leverages partnerships with correctional institutions to maximize educational access.

Number of potential students

The project targets a significant pool of 1.3 million incarcerated individuals in the U.S., with potential reach extending up to 2 million. Collaborations with numerous correctional facilities enhance our ability to serve this population.

Potential for reducing recidivism

By providing education and support, the Perryman Project seeks to significantly lower recidivism rates among participants. Our holistic approach addresses the underlying issues contributing to reoffending, fostering successful reintegration into society.

ABOUT US

Our Mission

The Perryman Project is a pioneering criminal justice reform initiative dedicated to addressing the systemic failures of mass incarceration in the United States. Founded by Joanne Walker in 2019, our mission is to transform the criminal justice landscape by providing comprehensive support to individuals affected by the system, focusing on education, legal advocacy, and holistic rehabilitation. We recognize that the current approach of prolonged imprisonment does not effectively reduce crime or promote public safety, and we are committed to implementing innovative solutions that restore dignity, provide opportunities for personal growth, and break the cycle of recidivism through our five interconnected organizations: Perryman Institute, Perryman Foundation, Perryman Legal, Perryman Consulting, and Perryman Resources.

Education and Opportunity

First Step Act Alignment

The Perryman Project is fully committed to aligning its programs with the First Step Act,
the most consequential prison reform policy in recent history. Our educational initiatives
and resources are designed to support the Act's goals of reducing unnecessary long
prison sentences, improving prison conditions, and promoting education for incarcerated
individuals. By offering Bachelor's Degrees and various certifications, we aim to equip
inmates with valuable skills that enhance their chances of successful reintegration and
reduce recidivism rates, directly supporting the Act's objectives.
